VATICAN CITY. Few stages carry the weight of the great Audience Hall of the Vatican. Spanish musician, singer and songwriter Robert Bahia has performed there before Pope Francis on three occasions — guitar in hand, just a few steps from the papal chair — in one of the most remarkable chapters of his international career.

Born in Orihuela (Alicante) in 1981, Robert Bahia has built a career that runs from Spanish rock’n’roll with Lobos Negros to Las Vegas, the Hard Rock Café in Barcelona and composing for Mediaset. But the Vatican performances hold a special place: he has also composed a song dedicated to the Pope, and taken part in an event connected to the canonization of Saint Teresa of Calcutta in Rome.

The moment is captured in the photograph above: Robert, guitar across his chest, kneeling on the marble steps of the Audience Hall as Pope Francis looks on.
